if you live in washington state, please take down & deep-clean your bird feeders! there is an outbreak of disease and we dont want to spread it <3
februrary 14 2021 – western WA they should stay down until march; if you live in eastern WA, keep them down until april. this includes hummingbird feeders! it’s not dangerous to humans, just birds. thanks for doing ur part to keep birds safe :)
Just to let folks know too, it will affect your pets if they eat bird feces or come into contact with affected birds (puffed up, won’t fly away when approached, sunken eyes). I learned the hard way, keep your animals indoors if you feed wild birds, ESPECIALLY if you’ve seen affected birds.
This kind of salmonella spreads through feces, so especially things like tray feeders or water bowls are at risk. If you keep chickens and the wild birds play “cleanup crew” after mealtimes, that’s another way that it could be transmitted between birds
please keep your pets safe everyone! and, relavent to this blog, please keep your chickens safe!
